But I would also consider what dpjax said... this would be a purchase that is either exactly what he wants, or not exactly and thus not work out so well. It's kind of a complicated thing to give as a gift, considering all of the additional parts needed either before or at the time of upgrading. I give you lots of credit for attempting such a solid and for lack of a better term, awesome gift idea; just make sure it's exactly what he wants some how. You seem to have the terminology down pretty well, so I'd bet you could do some more digging to find out which would be his choice.
